Salvation Army - More than Ringing the Bells
Jul. 28, 2021
Most people just call her Lisa… Having grown up in Bloomington, Minnesota, Lisa obtained her Associate of Arts degree at Normandale College, graduated and worked in property management. She served two 4-year terms on the Bloomington City Council for District 3 before settling down to start a family. In 2005 her family moved into the new 4,500 sq ft custom designed home in St. Michael. Everything appeared great until the economic crash of 2008. That’s when Lisa began her next round of personal training in bankruptcy, foreclosure, civil divorce courts and homelessness 101. Lisa knows now that these real life courses trained her better than any college course could to help her job today. She has worked for The Salvation Army since 2013 and loves guiding people through the valley of the shadow to a place of hope and encouragement.

One Bottle, One Straw, One Bag at a Time
Sep. 29, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Angelina was crowned 2nd Runner Up in the 2020 Miss Minnesota. Just last month, she was crowned Miss Midwest. As a part of her Miss America Scholarship Program, Melinda is speaking publicly about her One Bottle, One Straw, One Bag at a Time program to work towards reducing single use plastics. Join us to hear Angelina Amerigo, current Midwest, speak about her social impact passion of reducing our use of single use plastic. This is Angelina's message - One person one day at a time makes a difference. Personally reducing your use of single use plastics will contribute to stopping the inflow of plastics into our oceans. It's not enough to recycle because more and more plastic is produced. Curbing your usage in the first place is the key. Just think, if the 1.2 million Rotarians world-wide simply refused to use plastic bottles it would be a significant start to altering what has been accepted as the norm. |

Mango Farms Haitian Community Gardens
Oct. 27, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Mango Farms set out to provide a community in Haiti with a safe and sustainable space to grow food and raise animals in addition to partnering with master gardeners and providing agriculture education. Mango Farms farmers will be able to feed their families, earn a living wage by taking produce and animals to market, and provide money for their children's school tuition and other basic living necessities. A Haitian native, Gymps Sunel was raised by his grandmother after losing his parents at age 2. He was educated in Haiti, Martinique, the Dominican Republic and later on in the United States. After Covid-19 hit in 2020, Gymps saw an increase in the number of children and people that were living in poverty and the number of Haitians experiencing hunger plunged to a deeper level, many not knowing where their next meal would come from. It was this realization that led Gymps to find a parcel of land in his home country and the vision of Mango Community Family Farm was born. It is our hope that Mango Farms will provide a safe space for families to grow their own food and be able to provide a sustainable living wage from the proceeds of sales at the market.
Last year Buffalo Rotary partnered with Brooklyn Center Rotary in purchasing the solar well, water storage, and irrigation system for Mango Farms through a District Grant.
Gymps Sunel and Brooklyn Center Rotary member Ellen Schreder join us this Wednesday to talk about Mango Farms.
