Dave Herzig, coordinator for the Kid's Kite Building Workshop at the Kite Festival (sponsored by Rotary) demonstrated how we will be assisting kids to color and build their kite.  Don't worry if you missed it, we will show you again on the day of the Festival. All you need is the ability to stick tape to plastic and a SMILE!!

If you have been assigned to invite a speaker for an upcoming meeting, please do so.  If you need ideas, Mark Boyd has some but this is the job of you, the member, not Mark.  If you have a great idea for a program and / or speaker, please let me or Mark Boyd know.  We would like to develop a list of potential speakers and programs to assist you in finding great programs for our Club.

Our program this week was the Bounce Back Program's new initiative Just Say Hello.  Corey Martin shared the following facts:
* 40% of students at BHS are lonely
* That's 720 students at BHS alone
* Just a single smile (even from a stranger) can kill loneliness
* Loneliness has the same impact on our life as smoking 15 cigarettes / day
* Loneliness is your body telling you that you need social interaction
* Today's social media activity makes this issue worse - society is experiencing the highest rates of loneliness ever

Bounce Back's Just Say Hello aims to spread the news that a smile, which is free and can be given to anyone at anytime, can build a relationship, kill loneliness and be a powerful tool in changing the lives of those suffering from loneliness.

Mark Mischke, BHS Principal, shared what BHS students are doing as part of the Just Say Hello program.  High school students will be reading  books discussing social isolation and inclusivity to students in the BHM elementary schools.  Two bracelets that say Just Say Hello will be given to each elementary student.  One to keep and one to share at home to open up the discussion about what they learned that day.  BHS students will all be receiving the bracelets as well.

Buffalo is lucky to have a community Bounce Back program and educational system that recognizes the positive impact that we can have on each other and the opportunity to build a healthier community.

Thank you Karla Heeter for organizing this week's program!

Enjoy your week, and remember to BE THE INSPIRATION!

Hello fellow Rotarians!

Your regularly scheduled recap, normally brought to you by President Kris Dirks, is being temporarily interrupted by 2014-15 Past President Jason Chalupnik.  I had the privilege of filling in for Kris this past Wednesday, and  I must say, it was fun to be behind the podium again!

So here is what happened...

We welcomed District Governor Nominee-Designate Marianna Khauv & Monticello Past President Linda Mielke who gave an excellent, and passionate, plea to those who have not served as a Club President to consider stepping up.  As you have heard, our club has two very important board vacancies that need to be filled in the coming weeks... that of President Elect (to serve as President starting July 2019 - June 2020) and also President Elect Nominee (to serve as our Club President starting July 2020 - June 2021).  Have you considered stepping up to serve our club?  If not, what is preventing you?  As Marianna and Linda mentioned, we can all say that we are busy... but remember, serving as a Club President is extremely rewarding... and not as difficult as you might think.  We are fortune enough to have a wonderful and strong board to assist you!  If you are interested, or want more information, please talk with Kris or any Past President for more information.

We presented a $500 donation to Functional Industries to help assist with the purchase of a new passenger van.

We had an outstanding and informative program on the Village of Hope, a project locally partnered by Judy Bergquist, Julie Swaggert and Ron Moore, all from Zion Lutheran Church.  They shared with us how the Village of Hope provides the children of Zambia with essential needs like food, shelter and healthcare, while also providing them with an exceptional education... thus giving them the tools and knowledge to better care for themselves in years to come.  They showed us some of the many opportunities that are available for individuals and our club to assist there.  For more information, check out http://www.akcli-voh.org/

TEAM ROTARY helped Zion Lutheran Church and the Buffalo Community pack 80,000 meals on Sunday, April 29th, 2018.  Together, our Rotary group helped pack over 1100 meals, and the collective group a whopping 10,000 meals in a short 45 minute time span.  Scheduled for a two hour volunteer shift, we completed the task early when the Truckload for Life event sponsors announced that they had run out of boxes to pack any more meals!  Initially given the goal of 100,000 meal, the organizers revised the goal to 80,000 meals given the supplies on hand.  80,000 meals had been packed!  The meals are now on the way to hungry mouths across the globe and in the USA.

A huge THANK YOU to the following members of TEAM ROTARY:

  • Rotary Club President Jason Nelson
  • Rotarian Christine Husom and Elizabeth Husom
  • Rotarian Mark Kaminski and LeighAnn Kaminski
  • Rotarian Kris Dirks, Laura Dirks and Ryan Dirks
  • Rotarian Laura Barta-Lindquist and Logan Lindquist
  • Rotarian Jason Chalupnik, Tommy Chalupnik and Danny Chalupnik

Our Buffalo Rotary Foundation/Club partnered with two other Rotary Clubs, the Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary Club, and St. Cloud Rotary Club, to send school supplies down to Guatemala for the Common Hope students.

There is a team in Guatemala right now, and they will deliver some of these supplies.  They sent us a link below to follow their trip through their photo diary.

Today Buffalo Rotary with Toys for Tots distributed toys to 270 families, providing toys for roughly 650 children in the Buffalo and Montrose area!  It was a fun day, and a success!  Thank you to all that helped with distribution, sorting, counting toys, shopping, delivering boxes, and every other task that was needed to make this wonderful event happen! A special thanks to Jean, our Toys for Tots Coordinator that has put countless hours into this event, we couldn't do it without you!

And Oh, What A Night it was!!! This year's annual Buffalo Rotary Car Raffle Fundraiser was filled with disco balls, platform shoes, and bell-bottom pants. Our members were able to sell all 400 tickets, making the evening a successful sold-out event.

The Car Raffle Fundraiser remains to be the biggest fundraising event for the Buffalo Rotary. 100% of all funds raised at the event are donated back to our local and international communities. Through this fundraiser, we are able to to help programs, such as: Toys For Tots, Buffalo Food Shelf, Beds For Kids, Local school scholarships, Adopt A Family, Concerts in the Park, Fishing Klinic for Kids, Wright County Safe Communities, Mentorship Programs, Instrument Trail in the Park, Timber Bay, Capable Partners, Let's Go Fishing, Student Exchange Program, and many more community projects.

We appreciate all of the volunteers who made this night so fantastic. Extra special thanks to Pat Michalicek, Shawn Corbin, and Scott Goodmanson for their work in planning and executing the evening.

Congratulations to the seven winners who all shared a piece of the $10,000 prize, taking home $1,428.57 each.
